I figured it out.
Life is a joke without a punchline.
Every tragedy is just that. It isn't a test, something to be overcome, or even some shared experience. It is just a tragedy.
There is no order or plan. It is some DaDaist piece with no conclusion save pain, suffering, loss and finally...nothingness.
When you get that the joke has no punchline, and it happens to be on you; it doesn't get any easier but it makes the longing for that nothingness more understandable.
Ah.... now I see: for Halloween you're dressing up as an 11th grader in Advanced English who's just finished reading L'Étranger for the first time.
