From A Softer World

A very wise woman told me the secret to her years of marriage.

I wish that she was correct about the truth of relationships.

Saturday Morning (Posted from bed)

• I do not know why I am craving radishes right now but...I am. I did not like them when I was a child and I do not remember when I came to associate them with summer. I doubt that there will be any at the Troy Riverfront Farmers' Market. (And if you have not been, or claim in error that there is another north of NYC that is better, check yourself before you are exposed as the dilettante that you are.

• All Over Albany asked this week who had the best tacos (Fish Tacos at Bros Tacos was my response, naturally.) The question did get me thinking though. Who has the best breakfast taco or burrito in the area (not to get into another discussion of what is the "best" of anything) or more to the point, where can I get a good breakfast taco around here?

• Being spoiled by great March weather has left me a little irked by sunny and 34 this morning. It does impact my ability to do what I want outside. Like...ride my bike as I have been advised against running until I heal up. *le sigh*

• Finally, this made me giggle and is appropriate for this weekend.

Seasons Change With the Scenery

I could not find a decent version of the S&G version

Union Hockey
Yes, Union lost to Ferris State last night. Yes, it was disappointing. Yes, it was our game to win or lose and we lost.

I would like to thank the Union College Skating Dutchmen for a great season.

I am proud of my membership in the Union Community. Many of the people I love were met there and the my strongest relationships were formed there. A large part of the man that I am today (for good and for bad) owes genesis from the Brook the Bounds.

This Union Hockey team, as FAU mentioned last night, made the alumni jealous of those who were still on campus because they were experiencing something that we never were able to.

Way to Go Union!

And now from winners to...The Mets
Yay! Baseball is back! The Mets won, beating the Braves 1-0, and Johan pitched as if he were back to form. I know that it is wrong, and with this team...stupid, to extrapolate an entire season from one game but...I hope that R.A. Dickey will be able to continue the good vibes and great start to the season.

Continuing with Baseball

Remember the New Era commercials from last year with the estimable Alec Baldwin and some goofy looking guy (John Krasinski, or something like that. He was in that whale movie.) talking about their love of their teams.

New Era has a new commercial out, highlighting what it means to be a fan: irrational love of a team and irrational hatred of another.

Olbermann
Two things that have popped up. Keith may have been let go because of an onset tantrum/meltdown. Time Warner Cable may drop Current because of low ratings.

The Daily News offers their opinion about where Keith should end up.

The Weekend
It is Passover. It is Easter Weekend. For me, it is another weekend. My hope is that those of you that are choosing to spend time with loved ones on this weekend get the most out of it and that you appreciate the people that you are with.

Let's Go U!

The game is starting soon!

You can watch on ESPN3. It is on television on ESPN U (Channel 1871 on TWC in the Albany area). There are also a number of places where you can listen to it on the radio.

Let's Go U!

What does every chicken aspire to?

The Chicken Wing

I am not a huge fan of chicken. Chicken is really easy to do okay, difficult to do well, and sometimes impossible to screw up. Of all the proteins, it takes the least amount of imagination to work with, which is one of the reasons that so many people are able to cook chicken as their signature dish. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been thinking about my favorite part of the chicken: the wing (and thigh). I asked Teacher Dave the other day if it counted as a "wing" if it was breaded? He and I both agree that breaded, while tasty, is not a wing.

For me, a wing is chicken dunked in a sauce of butter and hot sauce that is deep fried and then dunked again. See how simple that is? Why do people do wings with such paucity of skill? Is it training? Do some people want their wings that way? I had "wing like things" in New England last fall and they were disappointing if I want to be generous. Take pride in what you do. The wing is difficult to do well but all it takes is a little bit of effort and a system to do it well.

Which leads me to...

Last night, a bunch of us were at the Ruck for wings. We all ordered batches to our liking, me with hot (To which Becca exclaimed "Not for this girl") and all the various shades of wings were represented. Early in the evening, Irisira stated that the Ruck had the best wings in the 518, which is a fair statement and not one that I am willing to argue against. Later in the evening, another member of the happy wing eating band stated that the Hill Street Cafe had "the best wings in Albany" which is another fair statement and one that I am not willing to argue against.

This got my mind grapes churning into mind juice.

Who does have the best wings in the 518?

First, I went to Google and one of the top hits (non-sponsored) was to the 2010 Times Union Readers' Survey. I won't force you to click through... Wings Over Albany (which is in Guilderland) won. Remember when I complained about breading? Yeah.

FAIL.

More searching showed that one of my least favorite places, the Ale House, had their own partisans. I know this is a personal preference and that there are a number of people who enjoy the Ale House, but I am not going to go there. There is something about it that makes me feel less than welcome and you know, I am not going to spend money in a place where I do not feel welcome. Regardless of how people crow about their wings.

There are a lot of places that say that place A. (like I Love NY Pizza) or B. (insert your local tavern) have the best wings, but no one has gone at it with something like a scientific method. This is not be volunteering to put one together, however, I am willing to sit on a panel that does the tasting. Has anyone done this and I am just missing this? Is this a futile project?

I want to know what the best is. I mean, I have my own opinions but I would love to see what the consensus was (and this is not to include those who vote in the Readers' Poll. They chose Wings over Albany and the routinely choose the Olive Garden.) from people that I kinda-sorta trust.

Oh, and folks, remember, breading is always bad.

This could be an amazing day!

Union Hockey
Thanks, Doug!
Union plays Ferris at 4:30 today. (See you local provider for television details.)

There has been some interesting press on this, including this piece in the WSJ, Dear Alma Mater: I'm Sorry.

To say that I am excited about this would be an understatement. To say that I am proud of my alma mater would be a gross oversimplification.

From the Concordiensis: Hockey History: Dutchmen skates to success on and off the ice

Go U!

And for those of you who do not care about hockey...
Baseball is back and the Mets are back this afternoon!

Oh, by the way, the guy who wrote and directed Field of Dreams...Union alum. Ayup.

The Mets play at one and then the Dutchmen play at 4:30. This is a great sports day.

Presented without comment
I saw this image floating around yesterday and I felt the need to share it.

Thanks
Thank you to All Over Albany for including me in the What's Up in the Neighborhood post for this week.

Wicked Wednesday!

Seasonal Food and Sunshine
I am so looking forward to spring produce. I want radishes. I want spring lettuce. I want them both dressed with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and cracked black pepper. I want to eat this outside with an overhopped beer (I am looking at you Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA.) and with great company.

I know that I talk about things like this all the time, but this is a craving akin to "one more cigarette".

Run with the hunted*
So, I went for a run yesterday, knowing that my knees were bothering me, and I only made it a quarter of a mile before I had to stop. So, I decided that I was going to take some ibu, wait a hour, and go out again. The second time around, I was able to complete a mile at a thoroughly uninspiring eleven minute pace and had to call it quits because while my knees were not bothering me as much, my gait had changed enough that my stride was off and I was hurting myself. Yes, I am an idiot. Thank you, Karen, for validating my idiocy. I am now 14% of my way towards my monthly goal.

One of the issues with the lack of a run yesterday was I was planning on using it to help set the straps on my CamelBak so that I could go trail running on Sunday. Why do I want to go trail running? Yeah, I do not know but it seems like a good way to set myself up for hiking season. I have spoken to Teacher Dave and FAU about getting out and doing some good hikes this spring and summer.

This morning, I had the best of intentions about heading out, but I was also smart enough to realize that attempting it this morning would be a bad idea. That does not mean that I am not
going to attempt a run at lunch. I will keep you in the loop. Not that you care but more so that you can laugh at my stupidity.
*Run with the hunted.

Deciding what is best...

Irisira was promoting Daniel B's (of Fussy Little Blog fame) Fussy Little Ballot.

Now, I agree with the whole using your pulpit for good thing, but I do not know if I can endorse the entire ballot.

What do you think is the best in the area?

While I did vote for some of Daniel's Choices:

Gus's has the best hot dogs.
Duncan's is the best diner.

Oh, and for irisira, vote for the Glens Falls event for Best High School Sporting Event.

(Oh, and if you do vote, please vote for the Olive Garden as the Best Italian in the area because it would make @90210kat very happy.)

T-t-t-t-t-uesday.

Badges, we don't need no stinkin' badges.
Pop quiz: What movie is that quote from?

If you said anything other than "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", please stop reading right now. Go to your nearest big box retailer, and purchase the film.

One of the great things about Foursquare, and one of the things that made Foursquare popular a couple years ago at SxSW.

Yesterday, I integrated RunKeeper with Foursquare (I do not know when this feature became available.) and after a run and two good walks, look at what I unlocked!

Okay, this is just awesome. It made me very very happy.

Oh, and I am twelve percent of the way towards my running goal for the month of April. Maybe I set my goal too low?

March Madness
I really have nothing to say. Yes, I had Kentucky. I finished in the 63rd percentile. That is not good.

But...I did pick the winner. How did you all do?

Community
While I am still in favor of #sixseasonsandamovie for Community, there has been some weirdness going on around of favorites from Greendale Community College.

On Saturday, Vulture posted "Chevy Chase and Dan Harmon's Bitter Community Feud Leaks Online" which outlined the mutual douchebaggery between the creator and one of the stars of his program.

Then Vulture came back yesterday with "Why the Chevy Chase–Dan Harmon Feud Won’t Determine Community’s Future" which states that it is a big deal but not that big a deal.

Then...

Gawker come out with last night's "Just Fire Chevy Chase" which makes the argument that...well...Chevy Chase should be fired.

I do not know what to think and I do not know if I am okay with seeing how the sausage is being made in this case.

Waking Up
Of course I did not sleep through the night, but when I woke up at 2:15 this morning, I remembered my dream (living in Hawaii, TEA was living with me, and the tropical weather prohibited the dream amalgamation of one of my best friends/ex-girlfriend (yeah, try explaining that one people who believe in dream interpretation) from visiting and they were blaming me for choosing to move to the island because I no longer wanted to be friends with them), had taken off my bed clothes while leaving the wrappings on my knees, and had gnawed quite a hole in the side of my mouth that is awful and painful this morning. So...good dream (great with exception of combo-girl being...weird), unintentional nudity while protecting my knees, and stress eating of my own face. Odd. Anyone want to try to describe what it means to me?

Monday Morning Looking Up

(As opposed to Sunday Morning Coming Down)

Song that deserves to be remade

Teacher Dave and I were talking about this song the other day. It is an incredibly dark song about addiction and relapse and it has not aged well. Part of it is the synthetically awful Casio tinged keyboard tones, part of it is the drum machine, and part of it is because it evokes a certain feeling of the '80s and not the good part.

So, here is my suggestion...some act that plays down and dirty rock and roll should remake this song. I would listen to it.

Image all the people
I saw this the other day and it still bothers me.
Things like this often bother me. Not that there is an obvious mistake, everyone makes those, including me (see the lack of editing on this post and/or entire site.) but that a really nice image and idea was ruined by something that could have been corrected by the designer asking someone else to take a look. (For the record, I do not know who designed it, and this is not a veiled or passive aggressive attack on someone. I just think that it was a great flyer ruined by something silly.)

FAILBlog has things like this all the time, and while some of them are quite amusing, most of them just irritate me. This like this prove one of two things: People too busy to care about quality control or people who do not care about quality control at all. One is an issue that can be remedied with staffing and training and the other makes me weep for the future.

Self Abuse
Last night, someone who knows me quite well, asked me not to do something today for my benefit and offered me options to do other things, and I insisted that I would be fine. Well, they were correct. I am, and will continue to remain, an idiot. In this vein, if you are not using RunKeeper to keep track of your activities, what are you using? A number of people I know use Daily Mile but I do not like it as much. Anyway, just askin'.

Ponies that are not "My Little"
WRGB (aka CBS 6 Albany) has a handful of programs that I will watch. HIMYM is the only scripted series that I enjoy though I will watch BBT when I catch it. However, they do news quite well. 60 Minutes is the gold standard. CBS Sunday Morning is wonderful and Face The Nation is my Sunday Morning Talking Head Program Of Choice (from now on SMTHPOC) and now that John Dickerson is the Political Director for CBS News and on the program every week I do make time to watch it. My SMTHPOC was supposed to be a hour long this past Sunday with the first half being an interview with Vice President Biden (which was great) and the second half being the "regular" show. At 10:59, I was told that most local affiliates had decided to keep with the second half hour and I assumed because I live in the CD which is the seat of power for one of the largest economies in the world that some of the people living around here would want to see what the talking heads had to say.

Then...

THERE WAS A CARTOON ABOUT PEOPLE AND THEIR HORSIES SOLVING CRIMES AND HAVING ADVENTURES ON THE FRAKING SCREEN!

CBS 6, who was watching this? Better question, were you better serving the public by showing F***ING CARTOON PONIES over a news program? I am being serious about this question? Were you acting in the public trust by doing this? Did you think that no one would notice or just that no one would care?

Get back to me on this.

Superb Sunday

Loving Timeline
Thanks to Facebook Timeline, this photo was commented upon on Facebook Friday and yesterday and that made me happy.

The picture is from June 2010 and it shows TEA and I playing laser-tag after we have suited up. That there were people commenting positively about what is one of the better times that TEA and I have had together made me very happy. Happy about Timeline, social media in general, and the people that are my friends.

The Worst Movie Ever

Are any of you familiar with "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer"? Yeah, I did not think so. TEA wanted to watch it on Friday night after ribs and fries and I agreed. (NetFlix Instant is great that way.) He fell asleep so we finished it on Saturday. Watch the trailer and then think on this statement from my brother.

"This movie should be subtitled, "Heather Graham needs to pay her mortgage.""

Well played, hermano, well played.

(Janet Varney is in this as well. The reason I bring this up is that I have had a crush on her for a while and last night, like a number of other women I have crushed on from afar, I found out that she had been in a relationship with Chris Hardwick.)

Being active
I thought about taking yesterday off from running and any type of long walk because my butt was really sore. (Yes, I know that some of you are going to run with that statement. Go ahead. It is a gift.) However, around five, I started feeling antsy* and wanted to get out and do something. I did a really abbreviated warm up, three miles, and then a quick cool down. (Most of my runs have been in that range. I need to take a break but I do not want a blank space on my calender.

So, I am trying to figure out what I want to do today. What I really want to do is go for a hike but the weather does not look conducive to it. I should go for a run, which is probably what I am going to do. (I have not even thought of the route. Maybe RT 7 to McChesney and out that way, but...it is cold and wet outside. Oh, and if someone says "What about a treadmill?" they will be dead to me like the others.) I am looking forward to the weather being consistently good so that I can cross train effectively. For now, I am going to do some yoga and meditate about how awesome coffee is. Any ideas, please text me.

If the weather was a little nicer, I would go for a bike ride. Thanks to Google Maps, it would look like an 8 Bit Adventure.

Awesome, no?

Nook Tablet
Do you want your Nook Tablet to act more like a Tablet and less like a Nook but you do not want to root it? There is a way to Dual Boot it. FAU, I am thinking of you as I am posting this, but @danap2170, you should try it too.

TEA and Vacation
TEA and I were supposed to go to Florida next week for spring break. See what I did there? Past tense. There are a number of reasons for this but the one that it overriding is that TEA does not want to fly. Going to Florida generally requires the use of an airplane, though there are other ways to do it. Now, I thought about pressing the issues, but I was afraid that his fears would lead to a panic attack on the plane and that would me a) vacation was ruined and b) TEA was traumatized, and here is where my fear would come in...I would be more concerned with spring break being ruined than with my son who was having a panic reaction. I do not ever want to be that dad.

The Great Beer Walk of 2012
I have been doing some asking around and I am trying to gauge the interest for this. It would, in all likelihood, be in either Troy or Schenectady on a late spring or early summer Saturday afternoon. Any preferences?
