Weird, Wet, Wired...the story of Wednesday

I saw this yesterday in Albany.

That lovely vehicle is parked under a sign that reads: Reserved The Bishop

Nice! This did spark a little bit of a conversation on Facebook. It made me giggle.

Union Hockey
USCHO.com did not update their rankings this week, and for some reason, I forgot to check the USA Today rankings. For the week of March 19th, Union was third, following BC and Michigan. Michigan lost, so I was assuming that the voters would move Union up but no. Minnesota jumped from sixth to second and Union stayed steady at third. *Le Sigh*

Questionable Content
So, there is something wrong with that?

Military Service and Sexuality
From the BBC via Gawker.

As a gay man he was also afraid of being bullied, and after little more than a week he plucked up the courage to declare his sexual orientation to his commander.

''They asked me if I had any photographs.'' Gokhan says, ''And I did.''

He had gone prepared with explicit photographs of himself having sex with another man, having heard that it would be impossible to get out of military service without them.

''The face must be visible,'' says Gokhan. ''And the photos must show you as the passive partner.''

Just remember this when thinking about voting for someone who will ask thousands of American men and women to return to the closet if they are elected to the Office of President. Not that we are Turkey...I mean they are a secular republic.

Music Video
Matt Nathanson has a video for his new single "Run". I was unable to find a version I could embed. Apologies.

Sleep and Dreams
I went to bed around 10 pm last night. At 2 am, I was wide awake after a nightmare, which I cannot recall, and wondering is this was going to be how my life is going to work from now on. Around 6 am, I fell asleep for ten minutes, but shook myself awake. I started falling asleep again and, once again, ten minutes later, I awoke because I was biting the inside of my cheek. At that point, I gave up and started my day. Oh, there were costumes in my dream. Maybe Victorian. It was very weird and scary.

Upcoming
Start thinking about what you like to sing when no one is around to hear you and judge you.

Unrequited Crushes
Why do I have a crush on Emily Gould? Why? It makes no logical sense.

My crush on Alexis Bledel is very understandable...or is my crush on Rory?

Weird Wonderful Stuff

This morning was surreal. Between the sleep deprivation and the tasks I needed to complete, I was laughing at myself and the choices that I had made by 9 am. (Yes, I am sure that a bunch of you automatically laugh at the choices I have made and I am cool with that.)

Anyway...

Today is Talk Like A Shatner Day (as it is William Shatner's, noted author and speaker...he may have acted, birthday.). Talk like a Shatner, folks.

Today's Questionable Content has provided me with the real reason to leave the seat down. Finally.

Was I the last person to see this?

And this is an awesome idea. Ad placement in The Hunger Games:

Fournier-Goldman Happiness Units

For those of you who are here from Questionable Content, let me explain what FGHUs are.

After one's base needs have been met, there are metrics to determine how happy you are.

To determine these:

Without thinking too hard about it, list ten (10) to twenty (20) things that make you happy.

Rank the list numerically in ascending order.

Now determine how happy they make you (1-5 pts)

Now list five to ten fears and rank them in descending order.

Determine how unhappy they make you (1-5 pts)

Now add each list together so you have two numbers.

After that is completed, divide your happiness number by your fear number and you will be left with your Happiness Quotient.

Your Happiness Quotient is how happy you are quantitatively.

You are welcome.

1997 was a great year

I did not even think about ho great a year that is was. How could I not have? In 1997, in addition to all those other bands, Radiohead released the greatest album of all time. (MHO, but I am willing to argue it.)

What is your favorite year for music? (I know my brother would argue that it is 1973. He is odd.)

Confession

First of all, you should be reading Questionable Content. (I often wonder how many people are reading it because I suggested it. Probably not many, but their loss.)

Secondly, I am often annoyed when people talk to me when I am at one of the (now four) coffee shops that I haunt. If I am in there it is because I need coffee, not conversation. I have my book and phone to keep me amused and while they are often sweet, well intentioned, and often attractive, I am not. (Well, at least not before my coffee. And beer. Most people only find me enjoyable after their pleasure center has been teased and their reason center turned down.)

So, baristas of the world, let a man have his coffee. I know that you are talking to me out of a forced obligation, and we both know that the flirting is just that. (Plus, why would anyone try to turn the barista/customer relationship into something more than commerce? Silly people, there be dragons there, and I can point to several examples for this belief.)

This is the most...

disturbing image I have ever seen in a Questionable Content comic.

I love Pint-Size, and I really want an Anthro-PC but...well...that is just disturbed and disturbing.

Happy Birthday, Grandma!

This Questionable Content (yes, it is an old one, I was just hitting random to see what ones would come up) begs the question:

What is the worst thing you can say during sex?

"Happy Birthday, Grandma!" was Marty's contribution.

What do you offer?

Good morning , Wednesday

1) More awful terrible no good dreams last night.

Why would I be smuggling heroin and why in little baggies in my stomach and colon?

2) I don't understand QC today. Could it be that I am too old?

3) Could this be the most awesome combination ever? I think so.

4) Continuing after last nights' Strange Days Indeed post, the listening to of John Lennon increased.

I give you:

A question for the ages

How many angry squirrels do you think you could take in a fight?

Seven?

Nineteen?

Eight?

One hundred and forty one?

I think that I could take a large number of them if, and only if, I could use squirrels as weapons themselves.

(Think of squirrel nun-chucks)

Oh Marty!

You know, for all the weird stuff that has been happening in my life (and by weird, I mean really fraking depressing) the whole arc this past week on QC has been depressing too.

Check out the most recent one here and tell me, have you not been a party to the end of a relationship like this?

Why don't I keep a supply of this?

I need one of these.

And I love the arc that QC has been taking as of late.

Marten's bitterness is well deserved.

See the full comic here.

And...

I just spent some time watching the election returns for Decision 2010 (well, the last 8 hours) and spent the thirty minutes reading QC.

It wasn't that I gave up on QC, it was just that I had other things to think about.

I missed it.

Why didn't anyone tell me about the fight between Marten, Dora, and Faye?

Especially at night, I worry over situations

As I have documented, I have issues sleeping. Either I do not sleep well, or my sleep is punctuated by dreams and nightmares that leave me feeling awful about myself. I do not know anyone who really sleeps well.

Do you? When you dream, what do you dream of?

What anxieties attack you when you are sleeping.

(feel free to answer anonymously)

Edit at 12:39 EDT

Seems that Gawker has a piece about this, that I didn't see until after posting this.

America Is Not Getting Any Sleep

So, a followup a question:

How much sleep to you get per day? Do you nap? Do you use a sleep aid?

Oh, and a quick (self selecting and completely unscientific) poll:

Which Toto song is your favorite?

This question is prompted by the most recent arc on Questionable Content.

Sometimes, like today, Questionable Content can be heartbreaking...

Yes, it's just a comic.

Questionable Content and Movember

Even QC understands that these things are awful...
