The Great Beer Walk 2010

Here is the idea:

Beer + Long Walk = Tremendously Good Time

(FTR, this idea was prompted by SandorS)

Thursday, June 17th, we meet at Wolff's Biergarten (895 Broadway) at 5:30. We enjoy the beverage of our choice and move on to...

The Pearl Street Pub (1 Stuben Place) (which according to Google Maps is 0.8 miles) where we have another tasty beverage after which will we head to...

The Hill Street Cafe (180 Madison Ave, and which is 0.6 miles) for another tasty beverage and then on to...

The Lionheart (448 Madison Ave, another 0.6 miles) for some more tasty beverages...which will lead us to...

The Washington Tavern (250 Western Ave and 1 mile) for another tasty beverage which leads us to our last stop...

Mahar's (1110 Madison Ave and 0.8 miles) for the last of the evening.

At the end of the night, you will have been exposed to some wonderful beers, some great people and you will have walked 3.8 miles.

Is anyone up for it?

Just In Time For Fleet Week

Study: 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' Repeal Paves Way for 'Free-Rape Zone':

"The conservative Family Research Council yesterday said that a repeal of DADT will lead to soldiers having unwanted gay sex and that 'homosexuals in the military are about three times as likely to commit sexual assaults as heterosexuals are.'"

The Human Centipede: The Game

Think of it as the old Centipede from Atari with...mouth to ass contact.

Saving You $12

Someone is going to ask if you want to see this. This is probably someone you want to sleep with, or have slept with already.

Don't be frightened.

This will allow you to pretend that you saw it without having to go see it. You can tell her that you did your research already.

That way you can spend the weekend doing what G*d intended you to do...drinking beer.

You can thank me later.

Cell Phone + Drinking = Politically Liberal?

This makes sense in a way, but...regardless of political choices...everyone I know is cell phone dependent and drinks far too much.

FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right: Study: Excluding Cellphones Introduces Statistically Significant Bias in Polls:

"Being cellphone-dependent also appears to be significantly correlated with media consumption habits (in particular, getting more of one's news from the Internet and less from television), which also seems to be increasingly important in determining one's political views. And there are some characteristics that may be even more subtle. For instance, there are some hints in the CDC data (such as the higher prevalance of binge drinking) that cellphone-only adults are less 'domestic' and more 'bohemian'. I suspect that, in young adults, this is correlated with more liberal political views."

Mmmmm...awful for you food...

If I could find a locally sourced beer (meaning East Coast, as I cannot stop my love for the DFH 60/90/120 IPA), this could be a very enjoyable meals, especially if I were looking to induce a heart attack. Maybe we should add this to the bad for you food tour? The nearest Five Guys to me is on Western Avenue, just below Schoolhouse Road.

Pairing: You need a bold beer for a bold burger, so why not a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot (330 calories, 32.1g carbohydrates)?

This Is Disappointing

I was hoping that this was true, however, apparently, it isn't. So very very sad.

Cuomo's Goes For #2 In Upstate Play/Ploy - The Awl:

"Running with Rochester's top cop turned mayor should go some way in keeping people from thinking of him as just a big-city, party machine-friendly, slick-haired, Clinton-loving, overly ethnic operator."

Lawmen Threaten to Deport Puerto Rican Guy to Mexico:

"Puerto Rican-born US citizen Eduardo Caraballo was arrested in Illinois and threatened with deportation—back to Mexico. Once officials got his birth certificate, it only took them three days to figure out he wasn't Mexican. Uh."

What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game.... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity and his mother's respectability.

Why Should I Care?

So, I am no longer following Lessig.

First of all, I don't need a movie to tell me that everyone born after let's say...1980...(including one of my siblings) are all suffering from some sort of learning disability.

Secondly, I do not really care about the fate of inner city public schools.

Thirdly, the world needs ditch diggers too.

A decade ago, I ranted about charter schools. Fifteen years ago, I complained about inner city schools. You all thought I was either crazy or misguided.

But...by the end of the summer, you are going to be talking about what a sin that education has been underfunded for two generations and how the economics of charter schools hurts communities...and I am going to laugh in your faces. Oh, and...if someone talks to be about how the Teachers' Unions are *good* things and not part of the problem, I am probably going to cut you out of my life.

(BTW, Good job Lessig, sending a bunch of your followers to a site that requires Adobe Flash! Way not to be a hypocrite supporting the open web.)

I see great things in baseball, It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism, tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set, repair those losses and be a blessing to us. -Walt Whitman

There's an app for that...

If they could develop an app that is a mobile bartender that would mix drinks, my life would be almost perfect.

Mental Health Apps: Like A 'Therapist In Your Pocket' : NPR:

"As the computing power of cell phones increases, more and more sophisticated mobile apps are being developed for the mental health field. They're seen as a way to bridge periodic therapy sessions — a sort of 24-7 mobile therapist that can help with everything from quitting smoking to treating anxiety to detecting relapses in psychotic disorders."
