Everything's coming up...

Milhouse!

There have been a series of really awesome things over the past couple of days and when Union won our second consecutive Cleary Cup, I actually exclaimed, "Everything is coming up Milhouse!"

Things that I love

(In no particular order)

Top Chef - I have given up on most reality television (Okay, I may have been sucked in to Dance Moms the other night but it will not be a thing.) but Top Chef drags me in like a Sarlacc (Yes, I have a dislike of that particular pop culture universe but...sometimes the analogy is an apt one, and it will make some of you laugh...I hope.) and I stay there. Part of it is the personalities, part of it is the food, and part of it is Padma. I am not looking forward to this season ending.

All Over Albany - Every time I am on this site, I see something that makes me laugh, makes me think, or both. Occasionally, something makes me angry, which is a goodness as well. I love the community that exists on this site and that even the contentious of fights seems like a loving if unstable family Thanksgiving.

New Books - I have been reading a lot lately (across genres) and the fascinating thing is that even bad books (poor realized plots or characters, or the genre novel that tries too damn hard to be something that it is not, even the first attempt at the Great American Novel) have great things to offer. The contributions to the circus of ideas that are put forth show that these people all have talent that may be misdirected. Yes, even Among The Living.

Laundry - Everyone has a chore that they enjoy and mine is laundry. I love laundry. I like the folding of the clothes. I get excited about the dryer sheets. Laundry rings my bell. Laundry gets my motor running. Laundry is awesome. (Your millage may vary.)

Walking & Podcasts: I love podcasts and I love walking. (By the way, RunKeeper is amazing and it helps with goals and metrics.) Together, they are like peas and carrots, or chocolate and peanut butter, or something you like coupled with something you like. It would be a little better if I had a dog. Maybe some day.

*Needless to say, I love and adore my friends (old and new, the ones I talk every day with and the ones that have slipped away but are still at the front of my mind), my family (who are amazing people that drive me insane while putting up with my insanity), and my son, TEA, who is my favorite person on the planet and an amazing young man.

Fournier-Goldman Happiness Units

For those of you who are here from Questionable Content, let me explain what FGHUs are.

After one's base needs have been met, there are metrics to determine how happy you are.

To determine these:

Without thinking too hard about it, list ten (10) to twenty (20) things that make you happy.

Rank the list numerically in ascending order.

Now determine how happy they make you (1-5 pts)

Now list five to ten fears and rank them in descending order.

Determine how unhappy they make you (1-5 pts)

Now add each list together so you have two numbers.

After that is completed, divide your happiness number by your fear number and you will be left with your Happiness Quotient.

Your Happiness Quotient is how happy you are quantitatively.

You are welcome.

Hunger Games Snark

someecards.com - You're the friend I'd feel the worst about killing in a post-apocalyptic death match for food

Yes, I sent this off to a couple of friends. People who a) have read the book and b) I am willing to make this promise to.

I cannot wait until people are culled for the Games in my brave new world.

Ummm...

this movie comes out.

Good News Nook Tablet Owners

As you know, I love my Nook Tablet, and while I accept that it is not an iPad, I was never expecting it to be. I am so very happy with it. One of the issues was the memory allocation, but this seems to have been adjusted. Well done, Barnes & Noble!

Barnes & Noble Launches $199 Nook Tablet:

"Barnes & Noble also promised to give 16 GB Nook Tablet owners the possibility to reallocate more of their device’s memory for personal content, which they’ll be able to do in stores. Customers that choose to change the memory scheme will have 5.5 GB for Barnes & Noble content and 8 GB for personal content.

The new 8 GB Nook Tablet will include 1.5 GB for Barnes & Noble content and 4 GB for personal files."

Mardi Gras

1) I love this song but would it be a hit now? It is more than a little creepy.

Speaking of creepy in a violence against women way, did you see what Chris Brown's opening line on his Rihanna re-mix. Gawker has a post about it.

He is so very classy. His Twitter feed is awesome. His beef with Andy Levy is even better.

2) FAU has complained about The Hunger Games visibility in the past and I am going to complain about another pop culture phenomena that is over exposed: Downton Abbey.

Vulture (which I love) has a piece a day, and yesterday's piece was "Why It Doesn't Matter That the Second Season of Downton Abbey Was Mediocre" but they are still going to talk about why this soap opera (which I did try to embrace) is wonderful.

No. It is not. Objectively, it is bad art. I am not saying that the people who enjoy it are lesser for it (out loud) but I am saying that the people who wholeheartedly support it (loudly) are missing something. (Looking at you, Most Media Bloggers!)

This is not a cause for me, nor am I doing this as a way to slag the fans of the show...I just do not understand it and the love for it.

When even the Guardian was saying after the second series (and it is series, not season. STOP DOING THAT!) that it was awful, why did the nattering and chattering classes (especially here) still love this show?

3) It is a quite a week for birthdays. Yesterday would have been Kurdt Cobain's forty fifth birthday and today would have been David Foster Wallace's fiftieth.

In honor of DFW's 50th, The Awl has provided 46 Things to Read and See for DFW's 50th Birthday. I have read and seen most of these and I do have to make the suggestion that if you have not read DFW, you take the time to do it. He will, if not change your life, challenge your suppositions, which is what an author is supposed to do. (See what I did there?)

I think I may spend the evening listening to Nevermind and reading a collection of DFW's short non-fiction.

4) Did you watch Maddow last night?

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Did you see the stuff about Frank VanderSloot? Amazing, was it not?

It does make me think of someone saying, "Pay no attention to the man behind the money curtain. Pay not attention! I will use my attorneys if you pay attention!"

5) It is Mardi Gras!

Here are your beads!

You know what to do!

(It's okay. It really is okay. You will have all of Lent to feel guilty about it.)

An aside:

Last week, I was on the bus headed east on Western Avenue, and the two high school aged people sitting behind me were having a loud conversation.

(Passing a Lutheran Church)

She: What is Ash Wednesday?
He: (Authoritatively) It has something to do with the Jews.
Me: (weeps silently)

Monday Afternoon

1) This was the song of the weekend, at least for me.

You know that you want to sing along. This may be the only good thing to come out of Red Sox Nation.

2) NOW With Alex Wagner is a lot more watchable when Alex is off*. However, having Ana Marie Cox (Twitter) on the panel makes everything a look better.

*When Alex was the weekend AM host, she was awesome. She was fun, and there was a certain quality about her that lent itself to Saturday and Sunday mornings. During the week, I just find myself becoming more annoyed.

3) I tried the burger at the Brown Bag in Troy.

It was very good and I did enjoy it. (I also inhaled it.) However, I am beginning to think that everyone's relationship with a burger (some people swear that McDonald's is good, while I think that it is acceptable on the road or if there is not going to be chance to have a hot meal.) is like their relationship with G*d; complicated, based not on fact but faith, and personal.

4) Did you watch The Walking Dead last night? Apart from the various "let us move the story forward" plot points, what did you think of the extended face eating scene (friends on Facebook thought it was too much) and the introduction of Sean(?) and the ripping of the impaled leg of the fence post? If they continue along the soap opera-esque "who is the baby's father" plot line much longer, I will stop watching...or at least I will complain more as I am watching. If I wanted to watch a soap opera, I would be watching Cougarton Abbey.

5) Name two.

someecards.com - This Presidents Day, let's remember that not all of them were douchebags
