The Road

A couple of weeks ago, I let my father have a copy of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. (BTW, this is the second or third copy that I have loaned out, and I assume that this may be the only one that has been read. *cough*)

I explained that the book was a post apocalyptic nightmare world where and unnamed father and son travel down the east coast, trying to keep the fire of civilization alive, while fending off cannibals, rape gangs, and the dregs of society that have survived (physically, if not emotionally, intact) and it it ultimately about a father's love for his son.

I mentioned that there was a film shortly coming out and it has to be realistic as it was filmed in Pittsburgh and that is as close as you can come to the end of times as possible...

I knew that there had been problems last year with the first screenings...the film was too dark and unclear in the message that it was sending, et cetera...too which I responded, "It is a movie about the end of the world with cannibals and rape gangs, how are you going to make it light?"

Then I saw the new trailer...

The Road Trailer (YouTube)

Please watch before continuing to read...I'll wait...

Okay...what did you think?

Yeah...did you have a "Field of Dreams" moment? Did really minor characters who only had one or two lines in the novel end up having their names above the title?

Does this look like it may be a feel good movie?!?

WHAT THE HELL?!?

I am being completely serious when I say that I was bawling for the last twenty pages of the novel because there is hope, but it is about huge sacrifices made out of love, and surviving for as long as you could for your child (which is a feeling that most people [one would hope] and all parents should have)...

But to make it Braveheart in Pittsburgh???

Ugh...

I was so looking forward to this and now I may just wait for the DVD.

Thank You, Keith

Thursday, November 12, 2009

Oh, Kristi!

Why won't my ex talk to me? (pout) He is unprofessional!

Reasons not to talk with you:

A) You keyed his car.  (Despite your protest, come on, if he has evidence, why would he lie?)
B) You are a journalist (heh) who lives out the banal details of your life online.
C) YOU KEYED HIS CAR!

Movember Update

I am still doing Movember and as I went up to the counter to get my coffee, the barista (who has seen me almost daily for years) asked about the awful fungal growth that is on my face.

I said it was for Movember and he knew exactly what it was...

He also gave me free coffee.

That is a very good thing.

Both the recognition and the free coffee.

Anyway, if you are interested in fighting prostate and testicular cancer, please donate at the about link.

Or link to this for me...

Any donation would be helpful.

Dollhouse

I am disappointed yet not surprised.

Fox canceling Dollhouse is not surprising. A Friday night drama about metaphysics and the nature of identity had about as much a chance of succeeding as I have a chance as making it as a drag queen.

That being said, and the announcement that SyFy will not pick it up, bothers me because even though FAU thinks that it is a golden age of television drama (and SandorS) has acknowledged the major problems with characters and plotting, I fear that there are few spots on television for smart drama that makes you think not only about the show but about the ideas that the show is about.

And...no more Eliza.

Dollhouse will be given the opportunity to have an ending. I guess that is...something.

Slate's Culture Gabfest and Precious

On Slate's Culture Gabfest, the three (rather annoying) commentators were discussing the film Precious and they discussed the eating of a bucket of fried chicken and how "exploitative" the scene was because the young woman's (who is black if you are not familiar with the film) face was covered in grease.

Just as an FYI to those who have never eaten a large amount of greasy food from a plastic container (chicken, beef, or vegetable based), after eating that much fried food, YOUR face is going to be covered in grease...it happens.

This is not exploitative.  This is Cinéma vérité.

A Couple of Things or Three

A) I am doing Movember. The proceeds benefit testicular and prostate cancer and it is administered by the Livestrong foundation. Please donate if you can so I can feel free to shave this off.

B) Is Facebook for the iPhone acting like a gaping maw of suck for anyone else? It is just loading the news feed where it was loading the live feed before. I am using FB Focus to help with this, but it is not nearly as convenient.

C) To the Equality New York folks, I agree with you, however, harassing the Senators to force a vote (especially when your side doesn't have the votes) seems like you are asking to lose...asking to be martyrs...the road is long and tough, but the destination is worth it.

At Wolff's:

TEA was uninterested with the idea of spending time with his father (disproving my less than marginal utility in that role) so watching Chelsea v Man U will have to do.
