So, I have been soliciting friends for their lists of their twenty five favorite albums. I would like to start posting these lists (or links to the lists) here with the tag of "The Album Project".
Music is a lot more personal than books or films and I am curious about what my friends (and strangers) like and what I am forgetting.
Anyway, without further ado, here is my list:
1) Radiohead - OK Computer
2) Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
3) Rage Against the Machine
4) Tool - Lateralus
5) The Cure - Disintegration
6) Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong
7) Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - So Far
8) Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
9) Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
10) Ben Folds Five
11) Sinead O'Connor - The Lion & The Cobra
12) Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
13) The Killers - Hot Fuss
14) Bruce Springsteen - The River
15) Zero 7 - The Garden
16) The Pixies - At the BBC
17) Husker Du - Zen Arcade
18) Michael Jackson - Thriller
19) Bob Mould - Body of Song
20) Lush - Gala
21) Jaydiohead
22) Pearl Jam - Ten
23) REM - Monster
24) Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
25) Nirvana - In Utero
Yes, I have two Radiohead albums in the top ten, and I had five in the top forty that I put together, but it is my list. I also noticed no jazz, or country and not a heck of a lot or respect for my elders. The only hip hop on the list is a mashup between Radiohead and Jay-Z.
Maybe I need to diversify? My tastes to run to the really pedestrian though, don't they?
Um say what you want about hair bands but you can't make a list like this without GNR Appetite for Destruction. They may be unhip now but they were the perfect storm of rock, hedonism, leather pants and drugs.
ReplyDeleteErik, it makes my top fifty, but it doesn't make the top 25.
ReplyDeleteWhat is your list?
You have ben folds five but no fuzagi???? What is wrong with you? I know that this is your list but you are not entitled to make one when you are wrong. My top 25? I dunno, did Nivrana and Beastie boys make a total of 25 albums?
ReplyDeleteThat is a fair argument. I am sure that if I made the list in a month, it would be different.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, take some time and put yours up, E. I know you can do it.
I will but I have to focus on my hex on Duke to lose. You know this argument reminds me of our radio show during college. Good bands and banter but no one is paying attention.
ReplyDeleteThat is great, Erik.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know that you are busy with the boys too...

I'm working on this now. It's going to be difficult. I might cheat a little. Typically an album fits a certain time in my life, but sometimes a couple albums from a artist first all together. And almost all the albums I'll pick it's because of the overall playability from the first track to the last and it's affect on me that will make my list. I'm only up to the Gs and I have 20 albums right now. And that's not even taking into consideration multiple ablums from artists I enjoy...
ReplyDeleteI didn't include the greats (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen, etc, because although I love many of their albums, they don't hit me at the same emotional level as these I've done. I could easily included them and made things even more difficult, but I decided to stick with those albums that really made an emotional connection with me, which is why most the albums are from the mid '90s to the present. I also tried not to include duplicate artists but for one particular band that was impossible. So without further ado here it is.
ReplyDelete(The list order would probably be different if you asked me to do it again, but most of the albums would remain the same)
1 Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
2 Counting Crows - August and Everything After
3 Toad the Wet Sprocket - P.S.: a Toad Retrospective (gotta cheat with a best of, but if you make me choose an album it's going to be Pale)
4 Jimmy Eat World - Chase Thise Light
5 The Format - Inventions and Lullabies
6 The Postal Service - Give Up
7 Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
8 Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience (although my favorite songs are on Congratulations I'm Sorry, this album really helped me through a serious time in my life)
9 Dashboard Confessional - A Mark - a Mission, a Brand, a Scar
10 All American Rejects - Move Along
11 Weezer - Blue Album
12 Plain White T's - Stop (before they became trendy)
13 Offspring - Smash (introduced me to so many more bands that aren't even on this list)
14 The Get Up Kids - Guilt Show (or New Amsterdams - Worse For the Wear)
15 Death Cab For Cutie - Plans (for I Will Follow You Into The Dark.)
16 Mae - Destination Beautiful
17 Plain White T's - Stop (before they became trendy)
18 Juliana Theory - Understand This is a Dream (although if you ask me tomorrow it will probably be Emotion is Dead)
19 Something Corporate - Leaving Through the Window
20 Snow Patrol - Run
21 Depeche Mode - Singles 86-98
22 Athenaeum - Radiance
23 Matchbox Twenty - Yourself or Someone Like You
24 Mxpx - Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo
25 Jellyfish - Spilt Milk (although Bellybutton kicks ass as well, Spilt Milk was the first JF album I had, these guys were amazing)
Just missed the cut. They could sneak up on the list if I did it again. And some lesser know albums that I really liked.
Dishwalla - Opaline
Copeland - Beneath Medicine Tree
Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up the Girl
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne
Relient K - Mmhmm
All - Pummel
Jet - Get Born
Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
It was hard keeping bands like the Lemonheads, Smashing Pumpkins, Bad Religion, and Matthew Sweet on this list, but none of their full albums every really hit me as great albums, just great songs.
In case you want to see more, I posted this question on a message board I frequent. I was thinking about posting it on Reddit, but then I thought wiser.

Amy, thanks for this. I am assuming that you blog over at LJ. Would you please give me your username so I can link to it?
ReplyDeleteI just saw this, sorry! I am strangemodegirl over there, most of it is friends locked though. Most of the unlocked stuff is the album cover project I am doing this year.
ReplyDeleteAmy, thanks! I figured it out based on your comments on Shauna's post!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
