What is he talking about?

Op-Ed Columnist - The End of Philosophy - NYTimes.com:

"Today, many psychologists, cognitive scientists and even philosophers embrace a different view of morality. In this view, moral thinking is more like aesthetics. As we look around the world, we are constantly evaluating what we see. Seeing and evaluating are not two separate processes. They are linked and basically simultaneous."

I really don't know what he is trying to say here and that bothers me, because I think he is trying to make a valid point, however, this is such an unreadable mess that the message is lost in the noise.

  1. I believe he is saying abstract moral thinking is far enough removed from snap judgments in the early environment as to not be an adequate guide for species survival.
Also, that social cooperation and its precedent, empathy, are being recognized as equally influential as social competition in species advancement.

I kinda think it's a swipe at all the little Randians who wanna leave the tribe, pivoting on their lack of social development.

  2. Interesting. That wasn't where I was going with it, however, your explanation is more than valid.

    Thank you.
