A Question of Bars

I love the Merry Monk on North Pearl Street in Albany, so I may be a little partisan but who has gone to the Bier Abbey in Schenectady?

I did not like my one visit, which may not have been reflective of other people's experiences, but...I still did not like it. Now that more people have experienced this place, what do you think?

Flights of Bier at the Merry Monk

For the record, over the past week, two people have recommended it (though I really do not trust either of their palates) and two others have had one of the worst experiences of their lives (and I do happen to trust them)...so...

Opinions?

  1. We went last night. Their beer list is fantastic, and the prices are reasonable. The food is ... okay. It's not bad. It's not Merry Monk. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there for no reason, as Schenectady is not exactly close (we were in Schenectady for something else last night), but I would go there again if proposed by friends, was in the area already, etc.

    1. I felt the food was...well. Not great. That is fair. Plus, apart from attending alumni activities, I see no reason to go to Schemctady.

    2. Ha. We bought our cars at Mohawk Honda, and though it is a PITA to get our cars serviced there, our sales guy keeps giving us free stuff to keep our business. Like free inspections. It makes the schlep over there worth it.

But, agreed - under most circumstances, I don't see a lot of reason to go all the way out there. I do like Schenectady, but not enough to go there for no reason.

I have some friends that live over in Schenectady, so I could feasibly see meeting up with them (for example), and that would be a good place to do so. I probably wouldn't suggest it over, say, Merry Monk, but if someone said to me, "Hey, we're going to The Bier Abbey on x night for y activity/reason, do you want to join us?" I would be amenable to that. But I probably would eat dinner at home first.

  2. You need to beg your friends to move.
