Books and Beers is happening on February 10th. If you are interested in the event, please sign up at the Facebook Event and leave a comment.
Just catching you up here if you don't recall:
The event is taking place at 6:30 pm at McGeary's which you should check out before and become a patron of afterwards. Tess is a wonderful hostess and it as an amazing space.
We will be having a "cocktail party" revolving around a book, in this case "The Unnamed" by Joshua Ferris. If you want, the Onion AV Club did an interview with Ferris that covers the novel.
Remember, if you are buying the book, use your local and independent bookseller. I recommend Market Block Books.
Oh, while you are at it...become of fan of AFM on Facebook!
Thanks to All Over Albany for their promotion of this event.
This is my blog. I speak for no one but myself here. The words I write, the images I post, and the articles I link to interest no one but me. I stand by what I put here, however, it is not a reflection of time, effort, or particular care. I just want a clearinghouse of what does interest me and a space to spout out poorly written and thoughtout rants. Consider this a disclaimer.

Beers and Books
Let's Get Through the Important Parts
When: February 10, 2011 at 6:30 PM
Where: McGeary's
What: The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris
Why: Now this is the interesting part.
I love to read and most of my friends love to read. I like beer and most of my friends like beer. I like to talk about books and my friends like t talk about books. Therein lies the problem. How rarely does it work out that you read something, and you want to talk about it with your friends over beer but no one else has read the book yet?
So here is what I am suggesting...every six weeks or so, anyone who wants to gets together and has some beer and talk about a predetermined book. This shouldn't be in some wonky or academic style, but more in a cocktail party sort of way. Think back to a time when everyone was reading the same book without the need of a book club (which this is not) and it was something that was spoken about at cocktail parties. (Two differences being; Americans don't read and rarely attend cocktail parties.)
And for those of you who are single, think about it this way, if they are going to be here, you know that they like beer (hopefully good beer, but Utica Club is good too) and that they are able to read (and they attempted a piece of literary fiction). I think that may be the foundation for a relationship that eHarmony would be jealous of.
Please, if you have to buy the book, use your local book seller. I am a huge fan of the folks at the Bookhouse of Stuyvesant Plaza & Market Block Books.
Please share this with anyone you think may be interested.

Amazingly Disappointed
Casey?!? Really? First Dale and now Casey? I was almost as shocked as Jamie when Casey had to pack her knives.
Okay, enough about that...or there is more but I will save that for other places.
Some pocket reviews of media.
Black Swan was...well...I am still processing it. It was beautiful and terrifying and while I have heard it described as a horror film as well as a sports film, it is neither and both. You know the sense of dread you feel when watching Jim commit to doing what he has to do in 28 Days Later? Yeah, that feeling is almost always there.
I am halfway through The Unnamed and I am wondering a couple of things. Why didn't I read this book last year and has Joshua Ferris become America's best young novelist?
Oh, and for those of you who like comics, I, Zombie has gotten really good and really weird. It is not a great book, but it is a fun one.
